In any city, good coffee is the first thing worth locating. In Marseille it comes from a small group of roasters and counters, most within a ten-minute walk of the Vieux-Port, and one on the corniche for the way to the water. A small roaster and café, a few streets behind the Vieux-Port, that roasts its own single-origin coffee on site and makes the matcha with the same attention. There is a short menu of food and baked goods, with bread from a local baker. For great coffee in Marseille, start here.
A micro-roastery and café in one room, a short walk from the port, with pour-over on the menu beside the espresso and bags of the house roast to take home. It is open seven days, which is rare in this city. An address to know for a good coffee.
A coffee shop by day and a natural wine bar by night in Le Panier, with a terrace. The coffee comes from a Marseille roaster, and the prices stay low: an espresso for around €2 and a sandwich for under €12. Come in the morning before walking up into the old town, or at the end of the day for a glass.
A café on the corniche at Malmousque, a couple of minutes’ walk from the Plage de Maldormé. The best stop for a coffee on the way down to the water, or on the way back up.
A bakery and coffee counter a few streets from the Vieux-Port and around the corner from Maison Empereur, opened in 2022 by the team behind a group of small restaurants in the city. The sourdough comes out of the oven throughout the morning and the coffee program was built with a specialist barista. This is the perfect stop to pair with a visit to Maison Empereur, and it is open almost every day of the year.
A newer café on what has recently become the coffee street of the city center, run by the Lulli boutiques nearby and pouring Tanat, the Paris roaster named the best independent coffee shop in Europe in 2024. They also serve matcha, pastries and, later in the day, cocktails. It is a great spot for a pause between the shops on Rue Paradis and Rue Grignan.
The Marseille address of The Coffee, the specialty coffee brand three brothers opened in Curitiba, Brazil, in 2018 after trips to Japan. The beans are selected and roasted in Curitiba, and the room follows the Japanese model in its restraint: pale wood, soft light, and a mezzanine above the counter. It sits a few steps from Le Café Lulli on the same street, and is open every day.
